What to Wear for Family Photos: Simple Tips to Look and Feel Great
Coordinate, Don't Match
Choosing what to wear for your family photo session is something I get asked about a lot — and it makes total sense! You want to feel comfortable, confident, and like yourselves in front of the camera. So, here's how I usually recommend approaching it.
First off, aim for coordination, not everyone matching head-to-toe. Pick a color palette of two or three colors that complement each other and fit your family's vibe. It could be soft neutrals, warm tones, or even a pop of your favorite colors. Mixing textures and subtle patterns can add interest and personality.
Dress for the Location and Season
Think about where we'll be shooting and the season, too. If we're outdoors in the fall, layers and cozy sweaters work beautifully. For a spring or summer session, lighter fabrics keep things fresh and comfortable. And don’t forget shoes that are practical — we may be walking or moving around!
Keep Patterns and Logos Simple
I usually advise steering clear of loud patterns, big logos, or anything too trendy that might distract from your family's connection. The goal is to focus on you all — your smiles, your relationships, your real moments.
Add Personal Touches
A few small personal touches, like scarves, hats, or simple accessories, can help complete your look and make the photos feel truly yours.
Wear What Makes You Comfortable
Most importantly, wear what makes you feel like you. When you're comfortable and happy, it shines through in every shot.
